Referrals
A referral from a GP or specialist is required to see a haematologist at Hunter Blood Group in Newcastle. Doctors can refer patients online using our structured referral form, or by fax or email. Patients with an existing referral can upload it directly. We triage all referrals within one business day and contact the patient to arrange an appointment.

What to include in a referral
To help us triage your referral effectively, please include:
- 1 Patient demographics and contact details
- 2 Reason for referral and clinical question
- 3 Relevant blood results and investigations
- 4 Current medications and medical history
- 5 Urgency and any preferred haematologist
What happens next
Once we receive your referral:
- Your referral is reviewed and triaged by our clinical team, usually within one business day.
- You are matched with the most appropriate haematologist based on your clinical needs.
- We contact the patient directly to arrange the appointment at a convenient time.
- A confirmation is sent to the referring doctor with the appointment details.

Do I need a referral?
A referral from a GP or specialist is required for all new consultations. This ensures we can allocate you to the right haematologist and that you receive your Medicare rebate.
GP referrals are valid for 12 months and other health practitioner referrals for 3 months, both counted from the date of your first appointment.
