Appointments
Hunter Blood Group haematologists are available most days for consultations at our Newcastle West rooms. We aim to see urgent referrals within one week, routine referrals within four weeks, and Clot Clinic patients within six weeks.
How to book an appointment
All new consultations require a referral from a GP or specialist. This ensures we can allocate you to the right haematologist and that you receive your Medicare rebate.
- 1 Get a referral — Ask your GP or specialist for a referral to Hunter Blood Group.
- 2 Submit the referral — Your doctor can refer online, or you can upload your referral yourself.
- 3 We triage your referral — Our team reviews and matches you with the most appropriate haematologist.
- 4 We contact you — You will be called to arrange a convenient appointment time.
Appointment types
Face-to-face consultations
We prefer face-to-face appointments for all first consultations. This allows for a thorough assessment including physical examination where needed.
Video consultations
Video consultations are available for both initial and follow-up appointments where clinically appropriate. Your haematologist will advise whether video or face-to-face is recommended.
Telephone consultations
Telephone consultations are not available for initial assessments. Brief telephone follow-ups may be arranged at the discretion of your treating haematologist.

What to bring to your appointment
- Your Medicare card and any concession cards
- Recent blood test results and imaging reports
- A list of your current medications
- Any questions you would like to discuss
- A support person if you wish (welcome to bring someone)
