Port flushes

Port-A-Caths and other long-term central venous access devices need to be flushed regularly to keep them patent (open).

After your treatment is completed, some health funds won't pay for regular flushing in a private hospital. Some people choose to leave their Port-A-Cath for possible future use.

Our nurses are all certified and experienced in flushing central lines and managing Port-A-Caths. If you need a blood test at the same time, we can collect that from the Port for you as well (please bring your pathology form with you and let us know at the time of booking).

What happens on the day?

One of our experienced haematology nurses will explain the procedure, confirm your details, and answer any questions you may have. The procedure itself involves connecting to the device, drawing back a small amount of blood, and then flushing it and 'locking' it with a small amount of heparin-containing saline.

Referrals

We will process the referral and be in touch with you to book your venesection. Alternatively, you can call the rooms directly to book your appointment.

Fees

We are a privately-billing practice and are unable to bulk-bill the port flush. The fee on the day is $82.10, with a Medicare rebate of $52.10, resulting in a gap (out of pocket) of $30.

The Medicare Safety Net

The Medicare safety net is available to all Medicare cardholders to reduce the impact of gap fees. If you have reached your eligibility threshold for the calendar year, your gap fee will be substantially reduced.
