Dr Alex Holmes

Dr Alex Holmes is a clinical and laboratory-trained haematologist, holding fellowships with both the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) and the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA). Born and raised in Newcastle, he graduated from the University of Sydney in 2014 and has been a Staff Specialist at Calvary Mater and NSW Health Pathology since 2023, having completed his training at St Vincent’s, Calvary Mater, and the Royal Hobart Hospitals.
Alex holds academic appointments at the University of Newcastle and is heavily involved in medical education. While he has a particular interest in lymphomas and leukaemias, he is highly experienced in the investigation and management of a broad range of haematological disorders, including cytopenias, iron disorders, venous thrombosis, plasma cell disorders, and myeloproliferative neoplasms. He is an accredited cellular therapy specialist and oversees patients receiving autologous stem cell transplantation and bispecific antibody treatment for malignant haematological diseases.
An active clinical researcher, Alex serves as a lead investigator for numerous clinical trials at Calvary Mater and has been published in various peer-reviewed journals. He is a member of the Australasian Lymphoma Alliance (ALA) and the Australasian Leukaemia and Lymphoma Group (ALLG), where he contributes to working parties for both lymphoma and CLL.
Alex holds admitting rights to Lake Macquarie Private Hospital and oversees patient treatment - including blood transfusions, chemotherapy, and immunoglobulin therapy - at Maitland Private Hospital, Newcastle Private Hospital, and through chemo@home.
