Fees

#Outpatient Consultations

Our haematologists are independent practitioners and set their own fees. Our practice staff are happy to advise on specific fees for doctors. Consultations are not bulk-billed.

For most doctors, the gap after Medicare rebate is approximately $100-200 for an initial consultation, and $50-100 for a follow-up.

The Medicare safety net is available to all Medicare cardholders to reduce the impact of gap fees. If you have reached your eligibility threshold for the calendar year, your gap fee will be approximately $20-$40 for an initial consultation, and $10-$20 for a follow-up.

Note that health funds in Australia are not allowed to contribute to outpatient medical care, and you will not be able to claim the gap fee from your insurance.

#Inpatient Stay and Outpatient Treatments

None of our haematologists charge gaps for inpatient stays or outpatient treatments. These will be billed directly to your health fund.

Please note that private hospital care may include fees outside our control, which may include:

  • Health fund excess fees (usually billed once or twice per year - check your policy)
  • Pharmacy fees (PBS fees, which are the same in public and private hospitals)
  • Fees for blood tests and imaging (most health funds will cover these)

As a general rule, other than any health fund excess fees (if applicable), the cost of haematology treatment in public and private hospital is very comparable.

#Infusions

Treatments such as chemotherapy or blood transfusions are usually provided in a hospital setting or by chemo@home, and fully covered through your health fund, as described above.

The infusions we provide in our rooms (such as iron, Aclasta, and others) are not specifically funded by Medicare nor most private health insurance policies and have a gap fee.

The gaps for these services vary, and exclude any cost of filling your prescription:

  • Iron infusion: $129
  • Aclasta/Zometa: $80
  • Venesection: $19
